Twenty-five years after the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, the Chernobyl disaster continues to affect new generations with unprecedented occurrences of birth defects, genetic mutations and tumors. In April 2010, Love & Art Children's Foundation visited Belarus to see first hand the humanitarian work of Chernobyl Children International (CCI).
CCI's “Home of Hope” program goal is to help de-institutionalize as many children in Belarus as possible. Each Home of Hope shelters up to 10 previously institutionalized children, placing them with loving foster parents who have been rigorously vetted. In partnership with sponsors, CCI has purchased 24 Homes of Hope, providing more than 200 children with a loving family of their own.
